LONG THOMPSON, PARTY LEADERS CALL FOR CHANGE IN INDIANA

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In another sign of the growing solidarity of the Democratic Party, today state and local party leaders joined gubernatorial nominee Jill Long Thompson in calling for real change in Indiana.

 

In a news conference at the Indiana Statehouse on Wednesday, Indiana House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer (D-South Bend), Senate Democrat Leader Richard Young (D-Milltown), State Party Chair Dan Parker and several other state legislators, Marion County elected officials and party leaders pledged their support to Long Thompson's candidacy.

 

"After four years of the misguided policies of the Daniels administration, Hoosiers want new leadership and a new direction for our state - and with Jill leading the ticket that's what Democrats will bring this fall," said Bauer, who spoke on behalf of the members of the House Democratic Caucus.

UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS UNION ENDORSES LONG THOMPSON FOR GOVERNOR

 

ARGOS, Ind. - Adding to momentum of her candidacy, today Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jill Long Thompson welcomed the support of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

 

Composed of approximately 11,700 members, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) represents retail, manufacturing, meat packing and processing, hair care and health care workers throughout the state.

 

"After four years of Mitch Daniels and policies that cost us thousands of good-paying jobs and hurt working families, Hoosiers need a change in the Governor's office," said UFCW Local 700 President Joe Chorpenning. "We need Jill Long Thompson."

LONG THOMPSON EARNS BACKING OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS

ARGOS, Ind. - Today the Indiana International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers officially endorsed Jill Long Thompson for Governor of Indiana.

 

Representing more than 4,600 Hoosiers across the state and 730,000 members across North America, the union includes professionals from the aerospace, automotive, government, transportation and woodworking industries.

She’s ready for a fight

 

On Wednesday, Long Thompson was less interested in reviewing her win and more eager to take on Daniels.

 

"I'm ready to now take this campaign to the fall, win and then spend eight years rebuilding Indiana's economy, bringing health-care costs down, increasing our high school graduation rate and stopping the privatization madness of Governor Daniels," she said.

LONG THOMPSON WINS DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR

 

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In a historic election for Hoosier Democrats, early this morning Jill Long Thompson was officially declared the winner of the Democratic nomination for Governor of Indiana.

 

A former professional educator, city councilwoman, Congresswoman and U.S. Under Secretary of Agriculture, Long Thompson becomes the first woman in Indiana history to secure the gubernatorial nomination of either major political party.

Courier Journal Endorsement: A Hoosier Choice

 

Maybe familiarity with public process was what made it possible for Ms. Thompson to identify quickly and specifically, when asked, the one recommendation from a recent bipartisan report on local government reform that she would have the state legislature adopt. She cited removal of appointed boards' power to impose taxes. Mr. Schellinger demurred, explaining that some ideas might be good for some localities but not for others.


Both these candidates could be good for Indiana, but Ms. Thompson would be better.
